AN APOLOGY FOR ETHEL WATERS
Who talked to God frequently in her movies
And for the rest of us
Who talk to ourselves:
The last surviving aunt:
The cook in the diner who,
According to the cashier's irony,
Must have money in the bank;
The dirty one reeling right there
On the corner you can't walk away from
If you expect to take the bus home.
Of course, we're not really talking to ourselves;
It's just that our audience isn't here
At the moment,
And you can't always blame the actors
If the theater is empty,
Right?
